American Airlines is to launch a trial of a new inflight streaming video product from Aircell, which it claims will offer its passengers a 'brand new, innovative' entertainment option.
Users will be able to wirelessly stream films, television shows and other content from an inflight library to their own Wi-Fi-enabled devices.
The US carrier is currently testing the service on two Boeing 767s operating transcontinentalflights, with customer trials set to begin early this summer.
Pending certification from America's Federal Aviation Administration, the airline intends to roll out the new product onboard aircraft offering wireless internet connectivity this autumn.
Rob Friedman, American Airlines' vice president of marketing, said: 'Once again, American leads the industry in providing innovative options to keep customers connected, productive and entertained.
'American was the first North American airline to launch inflight Wi-Fi, and today we again set a new industry standard as the first domestic airline to test inflight streaming video content.'
The carrier is also working with Aircell to expand its onboard wireless internet offering to a total of 93 Boeing 757s used for domestic flights.
